Frequently Asked Questions
What is the real salary for a forward deployed engineer?
There is no single verified, audited number. Public sources put reported ranges for Palantir, the role's originator, from $135,000 to $250,000 in H1B/LCA disclosure filings (base salary, 2024) and $171,000 to $295,000 in self-reported total compensation on Levels.fyi. Both are cited above with their source and sample size. Treat any site that states one precise figure with no source as unreliable.
Why does FDE compensation vary so much?
Three real factors: seniority (the role spans a first embedded deployment to running a seven-figure account), which company you are at (Palantir originated the role; other companies do not appear to have separately aggregated FDE-specific public data yet), and what we call the two-judgments premium: being genuinely strong at both technical judgment and commercial judgment is rarer than being strong at either alone.
Is Levels.fyi or Glassdoor data reliable for FDE compensation?
It is directionally useful, not authoritative. Both are self-reported and unverified, and tend to skew toward people motivated enough to submit a number. The London figure on this page is a visible example: a small sample (59 entries) that reads low for the role, shown exactly as reported rather than smoothed out.
Why is India or Singapore missing from the table?
We could not verify a clean figure for either. India's Glassdoor sample was small and the currency formatting was unclear enough that we did not want to guess at a conversion, and Singapore returned no usable sample size for this exact job title. See "Where the public data runs out" on this page for the full list.
How is the estimator different from a normal salary calculator?
It never returns a single number. It positions a range inside the real, cited data above (H1B disclosure data, Levels.fyi, or Glassdoor) based on your experience band, and names the exact source and method behind every result. Where there is no real public data for a combination, it says so instead of guessing.
How can I verify a specific FDE salary claim myself?
Check whether the site names its source. Look for a live, currently-open job posting with a published salary band (increasingly required by US law), cross-reference aggregator data as a range rather than a single figure, and be skeptical of any number presented with high confidence and no citation.
